This holiday is structured around the fitness of the group and prevailing weather conditions whereby a degree of flexibility is required by clients because we require dry conditions to do the Via Ferrata routes. In normal circumstances we offer three Via Ferrata routes in Slovenia and Austria and three hiking routes; however, we reserve the right to modify the programme subject to weather conditions and ability of the group. On your arrival day your guide will discuss the local weather forecast and consult with the group about the options available and difficulty of the individual Via Ferrata routes before deciding on a day by day itinerary in accordance with local conditions and safe working practice. Our base for this trip is Mojstrana which is well-placed providing easy access to the via ferrata routes in Slovenia and neighbouring Austria.
1. KANZIANIBERG / VIA FERRATA
Our Via Ferrata excursion to Kanzianiberg presents a range of different routes on various individual rock formations ranging in difficulty from grade A-C on an A-F scaling and offers exceptional challenges for the beginner as well as experienced Via Ferratist’s. It is the perfect location for beginners where they can familiarise themselves with the use of equipment and Via Ferrata techniques before moving on to more difficult routes. There is also excellent route variation on the different rock formations and sections where you will find the ‘adrenalin rush!’. Located circa 1.25 hours from Bohinj, near Villach in Austria – the area presents beautiful panoramic views of undulating pine forest and the surrounding mountains along the Karavanken chain. This can be a half day excursion; however, subject to fitness and previous Via Ferrata experience it may be extended to a full day trip. We can also combine it with some local sightseeing to Finkenstein Castle and Faaker See. Altitude: 795 metres
- Equipment included: Helmet, self-belay kit and climbing harness
- Mandatory Personal equipment: Suitable outdoor clothing, backpack and lightweight hiking boots
2. LARCHENTURM & KOSCHUTNIKTURM / VIA FERRATA
The mountain ridge running between Larchenturm and Koschutnikturm is exceptional and presents various route options from half to full day subject to fitness and prevailing weather conditions. After a scenic 1.5 hours drive from Bohinj we arrive at our start point at the Koschuta Hut. After a short trek through pine forest and traversing an easy scree slope we reach the start of the first Via Ferrata route at the base of Larchenturm. At this point we can decide to do a shortened route to the summit of Larchenturm only; or alternatively, we can head along an undulating ridge following a trail along a grassy slope with occasional broken rock sections to the formidable summit of Koschutnikturm. The views along the ridge are magnificent – to the south we can see the Julian Alps, whilst all around us are the neighbouring peaks of the Karavanken Alps, and as we approach Koschutnikturm we are presented with a superb view of its imposing north face – before we reach the summit.
After short refreshment breaks on the respective summits we drop down from Koschutnikturm from where we pick up our second Via Ferrata route including an exhilarating ladder bridge which eventually leads to the scree slopes below. From here we finish our trip with a pleasant 1.5 hour walk traversing scree and broken ground before entering the pine forest, where we pick up a well made path back to our start point at the Koschuta Hut. In a stunning location this is an unforgettable excursion presenting a variety of challenges with significant exposure on key sections. However, the route is exquisite and has been impeccably engineered to guarantee a safe and exhilarating experience. Photographic opportunities are superb – so don’t forget your camera and enjoy the views!

This excursion has been specifically chosen for its superb views and offers a circular route with Via Ferrata ascent to the summit of Mala Mojstrovka with a fairly easy descent on foot from the summit back to our start point at Vrsic Pass. The views from the summit are superb and from an excellent vantage point we have exceptional panoramic views towards Jalovec, Mangart, Prisank, the Trenta Valley and neighbouring peaks of the Julian Alps. This route also gives us a further option of summiting the slightly higher sister peak of Velika Mojstrovka (2366 metres) which normally takes an additional 1.5 hours round trip.
