1. BOHINJ LAKE AND SAVICA FALLS
This is a circular trip starting from the beginning of Bohinj Lake by the Church of St John where we join the Bohinj Tourist boat for a fully guided tour to the end of the lake. This trip provides a great introduction to the formation of the lake from the Bohinj Glacier, and includes a valuable insight to local history and culture amidst stunning natural scenery. After departing the boat you will then walk 3km in Triglav National Park to the renowned Savica Waterfall. Bohinj Lake has numerous inflows, the most important one is the Savica. Its water bursts from the underground of the Dolina sedmerih jezer (The Triglav Seven Lakes Valley) in the walls of Komarča as Savica Waterfall, which is the most famous Slovenian waterfall. The Savica runs over 38 m long level and falls almost 51 m deep. Total difference in height is 78 m. Another smaller waterfall also falls 25 m deep. Both waterfalls together form the two-part waterfall in the shape of the letter A. Right after the pool, which is artificially supported, is a small dam. After visiting this spectacular feature of nature you will return to Bohinj by the same route on foot and by boat. However, before leaving the falls there is a great opportunity to sample local cuisine where you can lunch at one of the restaurants at Savica Waterfall or in the nearby picturesque village of Ukanc bordering the end of Lake Bohinj.
2. SELF GUIDED BIKING
Our self-guided biking day provides a relaxing opportunity to explore the local area in the vicinity of the Bohinj valley and is structured in accordance with the fitness and preferences of the group. There are numerous gravelled trails throughout pristine pine forests where you can enjoy stunning mountain panoramas from an elevated vantage point with historical points of interest and delightful grazing pastures and farms where you can sample local produce stopping off at choice locations en route. However, if you prefer low level biking there are also plenty of options should you wish to stay at valley level and meander your way around traditional villages such as delightful Stara Fusina, Studor with its plethora of Slovenian hayracks, Ukanc and many more…Sample biking options include: Rudno Polje, Pokljuka, Dolina Voje, circular tour around Bohinj lake, Bohinj Valley, Uskovnica, Zajamniki, Soriška Planina – Podbrdo returning by train or Radovna Valley.
- Equipment included: Mountain bike, helmet and route maps
3. CANOEING & RAFTING
Today we start with an open canoeing session on Lake Bohinj where you can enjoy the peace and tranquility of the lake and its stunning reflections and stop off for a lakeshore picnic lunch before departing for an afternoon rafting experience on the Sava Bohinika river. Both activities provide contrasting scenery which can be savoured at a relaxed pace and provide opportunities for water fun and swimming in pristine waters especially for families with active kids…!
- Equipment included: Helmet, anorak, life jacket, neoprene suit (3mm) and neoprene shoes.
- Mandatory Personal equipment: Swimsuit and towel
4. FREE DAY
During your stay in Bohinj we will fit in a free day for sightseeing opportunities where you can explore the area and visit some of the local visitor attractions such as Bled Castle, Bled Island, or nearby Vintgar Gorge. Bled Castle is a medieval castle built on a precipice above the town of Bled overlooking the lake. According to written sources, it is the oldest Slovenian castle and is over 1000 years old. The castle provides a fascinating insight into medieval times and its Romanesque Tower, stately rooms, and museum with a stunning array of military wear and artefacts will take you back to bygone times. A visit to the Castle can also be complemented by visiting The Church of the Assumption on Bled Island which is the only true island in Slovenia. The island probably had a special meaning already in prehistoric times and the famous poet Prešeren praised its Slavic sanctuary. One can come to the island by a special boat with a roof, called a pletna. This boat, conducted by one rower with two oars, is known only in Bled.
We also recommend a visit to the dramatic Vintgar Gorge located 4km from Bled. The 1.6 km long gorge carves its way through the vertical rocks of the Hom and Bort hills and is graced by the Radovna with its waterfalls, pools and rapids. The path leads you over bridges and Šumer’s galleries, and ends with a bridge overlooking the mighty 16 m high Šum waterfall. Due to its natural beauty, Vintgar has been classified among the more important tourist sights in Slovenia.
5. RAPALLO HIKING
One of many highlights of your trip is a fully guided all day hiking excursion to the heights of the former Rapallo Border between Slovenia and Italy after the Second World War. This splendid location provides a superb vantage point to survey the surrounding countryside and is the only place in the whole of Slovenia where you can see Mt Triglav, Bled, Bohinj Lake and the Adriatic coast (weather permitting). The views are simply breathtaking and will last long in the memory and you will also discover remnants of bunkers and trenches steeped in history from the First World War. A walk along the former borderline is a real treat for history lovers. After World War I, the Rapallo Treaty of 1920 ceded the territory of Slovenia’s Primorska region to Italy. The Italians occupied the Baška grapa area, set up border markers and built roads, barracks, bunkers, and other fortifications on the mountain peaks until the beginning of World War II. When they lost the region again after World War II, many of these objects were overgrown by vegetation, but some were preserved and today make interesting historical monuments including the bunker on Kup, the fortification and border markers on top of Mount Bača, the barracks on Mount Možic, the iron bunker on Mount Lajnar, and many others. The marked trail along the old border maintained by the Podbrdo Tourist Association leads across the peaks above the Baška grapa gorge (Porezen, Slatnik, Možic, and Črna prst), beginning and ending in Podbrdo.
6. TRIGLAV SEVEN LAKES HIKING
No visit to this region would be complete without visiting the stunningly beautiful landscape of the Triglav Seven Lakes Valley nestled in a tranquil location 1500 metres above sea level. This is a fully guided all day hiking excursion taking in three stunning mountain lakes, picturesque mountain forests and delightful alpine pastures with grazing cows and traditional timber framed farm buildings. During this trip you will see four grazing pastures where we can stop off to sample cheese and sour milk at local farms. Along our way we will see mountain huts, alpine flowers, a variety of birds and perhaps the occasional mountain goat together with dramatic views towards Mt Triglav and the surrounding mountains.
