This is a full day tour combining visits to Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle – two of Slovenia’s world famous tourist locations.
POSTOJNA CAVE
Postojna Cave is the largest cave in the ‘classic karst’ and the most visited show cave in Europe. Its 21 km of galleries, tunnels and magnificent halls combined with unique formations and picturesque features have enchanted visitors from all over the world for almost 200 years. The Postojna Cave is the only cave where you can experience an exciting train ride into the heart of the underground world through a breathtakingly beautiful subterranean landscape. Riding under its magnificent arches with stalactites hanging down like chandeliers,the electric lighting allows you to admire the size and splendour of the beautiful calcite formations formed over thousands of years. The maze of tunnels, galleries and huge halls will take your breath away and has enchanted 34 million visitors from all over the world over the last two centuries. Our cave tour lasts around 90 minutes and no special equipment is required; however, a warm sweater and comfortable shoes are recommended, as the temperature in the cave is a constant 10 degrees. At the end of your visit there will be an opportunity to purchase souvenirs from the shops at the cave complex and to have lunch before departing for Predjama Castle just 10 kilometres further on from Postojna.
PREDJAMA CASTLE
Predjama Castle is ranked among the most fascinating castles in the world and for over 700 years this unconquerable bastion has perched halfway up a 123 metre cliff in the gaping mouth of a karst cave. Its dramatic setting and noble past will excite your imagination…listen to the legend of the rebellious knight Erazem of Predjama Castle and discover secret and underground caves which are part of its structure. Today’s castle dates from the Renaissance period, but the date of its construction is confirmed by a coat of arms of its owners, the Kobenzl family, from 1583. Concealed behind it is an older nucleus – the original cave castle. A symbol of defiance, the refuge of the bold, wilful and rebellious knight Erazem of Predjama. Old depictions and descriptions – particularly from the last 200 years – prove that Predjama Castle was even then visited and admired by large numbers of travellers. It is still worth a visit today. There is always something happening at Predjama Castle, especially in summer, when the programme includes Erazem’s medieval tournament. Every year this brings together a large number of visitors and performers, who together stage a historical spectacle. At the end of your visit there will be time to purchase souvenirs before we depart for Bovec.
