1. SIGHTSEEING DAY
After your arrival in Bohinj your first day has been purposely designed as a leisurely sightseeing excursion with a morning visit to Bled Castle and Island followed by an afternoon trip to the nearby Vintgar Gorge. This will also give you a chance to familiarise yourself with the local area and its history ahead of the rigours of five consecutive days of hiking in Slovenia made up of four longer routes with an optional half day route on the third day. Steeped in history and over 1000 years old, Bled Castle will enchant you with its deep rooted history going back to medieval times and afterwards you will take a pletna boat (unique to Bled) to visit Bled Island and The Church of the Assumption. After a brief interlude for lunch we then depart for nearby Vingar Gorge where you will be able to walk along forest trails offering superb views of this most dramatic natural feature carved out of limestone by the waters of the Radovna river. At the end of the day you will be briefed by your guide about the week’s hiking itinerary and options available in accordance with fitness and requirements of the group.
- What’s included: Tickets to Bled Castle, Bled Island, Pletna boat, Vintgar Gorge and transfers
- Mandatory Personal equipment: Personal outdoor clothing, backpack and suitable hiking boots
2. DEBELA PEC HIKING
We start our day with a short drive to the high plateau Pokljuka overlooking the beautiful Bohinj Valley from where we begin our walk at Medvedova Konta. From here we follow a delightful trail through spruce forests before emerging at the snow covered alpine pasture, Planina Lipanca. Here you will see some traditional Slovenian high farm buildings and there is also a mountain hut where we take well needed refreshments. Our trip then progresses over more open ground before emerging on the summit of Debela Pec (2014 metres) commanding stunning panoramic views of the Gorenska region. With good visibility we will be able to see Lakes Bled and Bohinj, the Julian Alps, Karavanken Alps bordering Austria and south towards the Ljubljana plain. This is a truly breathtaking walk and a gret introduction to Slovenia trekking, suitable for active families and adult groups with average fitness and includes moderate gradients suitable for people of all ages. If you have plenty of energy it may also be structured as a circular walk taking in Planina Javornik where you can see traditional farm buildings evocative of a bygone era and dating back over 100 years dotted around open alpine pasturelands.
Duration: 5-6 hours
3. OGRADI HIKING
We start our day with a short drive to Planina Blato from where we begin our walk through a spruce forest heading to Planina Laz, one of Slovenia’s most beautiful alpine pastures. From here we progress on a mixture of open and broken ground where we will see numerous alpine flowers, bushes and grassland. On Planina Laz we will see grazing cows and traditional farm buildings and there is also a cheese farm where you can take refreshments and sample local cheeses and sour milk. After a short break we head for the summit of Ogradi which takes around 3 hours and offers commanding views towards Mt. Triglav and surrounding mountains. From Ogradi we then descend to Planina Krstenica, the highest pasturelands in Slovenia where we take a short break at an alpine hut before continuing our descent back to our start point at Planina Blato. This is a fairly easy and relaxing walk with occasional light scrambling before the summit of Ogradi and is suitable for active families and adult groups of reasonable fitness.
Duration: 6-7 hours
4. KOMNA OR TRIGLAV LAKES HIKING
After a short drive adjacent the shore of Bohinj Lake through beech forests to Savica Falls we begin our ascent to the Komna Mountain Hut walking along a former 1st World War trail which traverses back and forth up the mountainside through a beautiful beech forest. The trail is very well made and has stood the test of time with a well made series of switchbacks underpinned by substantial stoneworks at key sections as we traverse the otherwise steep mountainside. Throughout the walk you will see many remnants of such stonework laid down by soldiers from the 1st World War which make up our route along a former supply line mule trail. Thankfully, as a result of the soldiers endeavours, the walking is fairly easy and within 2.5 hours we will emerge at the Komna Hut commanding stunning views of Bohinj Lake, Vogel and neighbouring mountains – the perfect place for our lunch stop where you can either picnic outdoors or purchase food and enjoy panoramic views towards Bohinj Lake from the Komna Hut. After lunch we the descend by the same route back to Savica Falls.
Duration: 5 hours
However, if you wish to extend this trip we can continue the walk to Planina na Kraju where you can see various remnants of buildings from the 1st World War before back to Savica Falls.
Duration: 5.5 hours
Alternatively, for more active groups we can offer various options covering a more expansive Triglav Lakes circuit and this option will be outlined by your guide at the start of your holiday.
5. VISEVNIK HIKING
Today begins with a short drive to high plateau Pokljuka which is also the location for an annual Biathlon World Cup. From here we follow a mountain path runs along the route of the Visevnik ski lift adjacent a spruce forest. The trail is fairly easy underfoot starting on open ground before it becomes a lille more broken and rocky towards the Visevnik summit. Once on the summit you will have beautiful views towards Mt. Triglav, Tosc, Bohinj Valley and Lake, the Karavanken mountains and surrounding mountains in all directions. The summit is the perfect place for our lunch stop where you will have plenty of opportunity for photographs before we begin our easy descent back to Rudno Polje. In the months of September and October you will also be able to see various wild mushroom species on the forest floor with a stunning array of shapes and vivid colours.. This is a relaxing walk with stunning views for minimum effort – enjoy!
Duration: 4-5 hours
6. RODICA HIKING
Our final Slovenia trekking excursion starts off with a 10km drive into the mountains to Javorje from where we begin with a 45 minute walk to Planina Suha. We walk firstly through pine forests before emerging on more elevated broken ground where you will see alpine pasturelands and some traditional mountain huts. At this stage we have a brief stop to take in our surroundings before heading onwards to Lepa Suha from where you will be able to see Rodica in constant view until we reach its summit. This part of the walk is now on open grassland and presents a truly beautiful scene of peace and tranquility in the mountains.
Once on the summit of Rodica the views are sublime and in good conditions we can see Mt. Triglav, Bohinj Valley and lake, Krn, towards Primorska and all the way to the Adriatic coast.
